If only I knew about this then maybe I would have changed where we wanted to go in Central Vietnam!
We were advised of this when we checked into the resort, and to tell you the truth, I was a bit shocked! So I decided to google it to see what was going on! There were plenty of threads and links of people complaining about the $6 fee! Apparently Hoi An lost the UNESCO tag and so the money goes towards fixing the town, but people say otherwise!
We were thinking wether or not we should visit Old Town, but since we were there, we thought well, why not, we'll just pay to enter!
When we got there, there was a booth with security out the front of the entrance. We decided to hang out at a cafe out front to see if tourists get charged. WELL, WELL, WELL, people were just walking in and not paying! What the? I didn't get it? Do we pay or don't we? We finished our drinks and tried our luck to see if we had to pay. We managed to get in, no problems!
We roamed the streets, it was a bit busy, full of tourists and tailor shops. It was a really charming and quaint town. Definitely worth seeing. The restaurants in Old town are more expensive than outside of Old Town, so I would recommend walking around outside and check the prices. Some places also do happy hour for drinks. We went to one place and it was happy hour from 10am-9pm! Bargain!
The food in Hoi An is different from the North and South. It's amazing! |
When we were walking out of Old Town, we started to see security check if people had tickets to enter Old Town, as well as seeing tourists at the ticket booth paying! I don't get it? It's not very fair for some tourists to pay and some can just walk in? It's not consistent! It really made me angry!
We also decided to go back to Old Town at night, and see if we were to get charged an entry fee. Guess what, we didn't get charged at all! So we managed to see Old Town at night as well! To be honest, it looks better during the day!
Once we left Old Town, we roamed around the Night markets which are open from about 6pm-10pm. The owners are nice and don't force you to buy anything. We bought some key rings and managed to haggle them down. She was a lovely lady!
Paying the $6 fee really put me off Hoi An, and I'm not sure if I would visit the area again. I guess it's a personal choice if this would put you off or not. To be honest, I just don't find it fair at all!
If you're interested in coming to Hoi An, make sure you google about the Hoi An Old town entry fee and you can make your own decision from there.
Until then,
-V
