Rome: Vatican City & Museum, Castel Sant'Angelo, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain & Spanish Steps

It was a full on day today! We started off early and decided to go to the Vatican Museum early. And man, that was a big mistake! We were in line to go past security for about 45 minutes? It was bad. It was hot, people were pushing and shoving trying to get in first. Seriously, everyone is going to get in!!! We were so happy once we got in! It was like we were in heaven!

Beautiful day to be at the Vatican!

Just one side of the Vatican in the piazza

First stop, St Peter's Basilica. Just letting you know now, that you have to cover your shoulders and make sure your skirts/dresses/pants aren't short or else you won't be allowed to enter the basilica. The line up to get in was definitely worth it. It was amazing! You could be in there for hours just admiring every single section of the church. Here the pics say everything!

Selfie time!

The dome

We then decided to walk up to the dome of St Peter's Basilica. There's 2 types of tickets, one for stairs all the way, and the other for lift + stairs. We chose the lift + stairs combo (for an extra 2 euro) and I'm so glad we did! My legs were definitely getting a workout, and it was so hot as well! It was steps, then winding steps. Felt like we were going round the twist! When we got to the top though, it was amazing. The view of the vatican from the top was gorgeous! The only thing that put me off was the amount of people that were up there. It was like sardines and you had to wait around for people to move so that you could get a good shot of Vatican City. We didn't stay long as it was packed, but when we wanted to go back down, there was a line for that too, so we were waiting about 10 minutes to get back down again!

These are just a couple of the stairs that we had to climb!

Amazing Views!

Selfie Time! Looks amazing!

That is the dome that we climbed!

Next stop, the Vatican Museums where the famous Sistine Chapel is. There were a whole lot of other things to see, but I think everyone was there to get a glimpse of the chapel. We got lost getting there (imagine that!) We finally got there and it was kind of not what I was expecting. The room was very dark (which is understandable as you don't want the paintings to fade) but I think it was because it was so packed in there. No photographs are allowed and no talking either. Heaps of people were still talking so all you could hear was 'shhhhhh' from all the guards every 30 seconds. It is a beautiful piece of work though. Would definitely recommend going when it's not peak season to really admire each painting.

Hello.. Rodin's Thinker!

Off we went to Castel Sant'Angelo, a castle which was turned into a fortress and a refuge for the popes during battles. From the top of the fort, you could see the long secret wall where there was access to and from there to the Vatican. Once you got to the top of the fortress, you could see amazing views of the Vatican. It was worth the money going in I would say. When would be the next time you would be coming back to Rome? I say, just do it!

Because we fell asleep early the night before, we decided to make up for it today. So we started walking towards the Pantheon. It was smaller than I expected. And because admission was free as well, it was packed in there! We didn't stay that long either, but it was definitely a sight to see while in Rome!

Selfie in front of the Pantheon!

All attractions are kind of close together, so we walked to all the places. I think it's good in a way because you end up finding things that you've never seen, are getting lost in small cute alleyways! We then found our way to Trevi Fountain, one of the largest and most popular fountains in the world. It's located in a small Piazza, and there were so many people just hanging and chilling out as that's what people do. It was a beautiful fountain (and I'm sure it would have looked beautiful at night too!) We took our photos and were on our merry way.

Trevi Fountain. Would look gorgeous at night!

Last stop, was the Spanish Steps, and there was even more people hanging here! Up the top of the steps was the Franciscan Church of Trinita dei Monti. Because of all the climbing we did today, we didn't end up climbing up the top of the steps. Our legs were jelly by the end of the day!

It was a full on day seeing and exploring Rome, but I would say seeing the Vatican was an amazing feeling. Another day of Rome is on it's way!

Until then,

-V
