Berlin: Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, Topography of Terror, Holocaust Memorial, Brandenburg Gate & a German Dinner

The rain has been constant so far. But that didn't stop us from going out to see the sights!

We started off to see a section of the Berlin Wall that is still standing. It felt really weird seeing the wall, and what was written on it. People were taking photos in front of it, and of course, so did I! But I was thinking, do you smile or not? There is just so much history here especially about the Nazi reign back in the day. As we were walking through Berlin, there we still sections of the wall here and there that were still up, as remembrance.

We took the train down to the city centre. We took a train from the station Nordbahnhof. It was a 'ghost station' back then as no trains would stop there as it was on the border of East and West Berlin. Very interesting. The trains run there now but imagine that! We didn't know how to buy tickets but this old man helped us because we looked so lost!

Nordbahnhof Station. A station that was once a 'Ghost Station'. Sure still felt like it!

We ended up finding Checkpoint Charlie, the crossing point between East and West Berlin during the cold war. More info here. I don't know I found it weird that there were soldiers still there in uniform taking photos and acting all cool and stuff. They seriously looked like losers! Anyway, as we didn't have a lot of time, we didn't go into the museum.

Checkpoint Charlie

Soldiers still there posing. You can take photos with them if you want!

We then headed off to the Topography of Terror. A free museum where you got to look at a timeline of how Adolf Hitler started and how he reigned during those days. It was sad. Could you believe he was in charge of killing 5.5 million Jews?

Nazi propaganda posters

Names of the people that died during the Nazi Reign. This sign went on for ages

Me so hungry! Eating a waffle...Found it while walking to the next stop

Speaking of which, we walked to the Holocaust Memorial, a memorial dedicated to all the Jewish victims of the holocaust. It was huge and confusing. You could seriously get lost in there. It was like a maze!

Can you believe there are 2,711 of these?

All different lengths and heights

Off we went to see the Brandenburg Gate which was a former city gate but is now a monument. More amazing architecture to see and admire in Berlin!

Me at the Brandenburg Gate

We decided to walk home and find somewhere to eat for dinner. Of course we wanted to find some authentic German restaurant and yay.. we found one! The food was amazing and my dish was so good for a cold, rainy day. Love German food!

My hearty German meal - Beef Roulade w/ red cabbage and potato dumplings

Me and a Berliner Weisse - beer w/ a shot of cherry syrup as recommended by the waitress. It was yum!

With the time restraints that we had. We managed to see the things that we wanted to see. Would have been good to stay longer. There is just so much to see and do! Next stop, driving on the autobahn! One of Lee's dreams he can cross off his bucket list.

Until then,

-V
